Ocean observation is essential for the knowledge base of the Green Deal. However, data are collected by different authorities for different purposes, which harms interoperability and efficiency. The European Commission is planning a legislative initiative which aims to achieve a common EU approach for measuring once and using the data for many purposes. It will propose joint planning of observation activities and a framework for collaboration on a national and EU scale.

On Tuesday 23 February 2021 from 14:00 to 16:00 (CET) SEArica, in cooperation with the Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission and the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions is organising an online event to conclude the public consultation on Ocean Observation.

The event will be hosted and chaired by MEP Alicia Homs, Vice-Chair of the SEArica Intergroup for Biodiversity & Ocean Literacy. Ms Charlina Vitcheva, Director-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MARE) at the European Commission will join us for a high level keynote speech. MEP Catherine Chabaud, Vice-Chair of the SEArica Intergroup for Climate & Governance and MEP Ville Niinistö, Member of the SEArica Intergroup will join the discussion.
