Burgas Free University /BFU/ was established with an Act of The Great National Assembly on 18 September 1991, and is one of the three first non-state universities in the country.The University is accredited by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency and is certified under the International Quality Standard ISO 9001:2008. BFU is a modern and innovative university, caring for its students and their professional realization, and which has significant academic achievements and an internationally recognized status.
Burgas Free University is focused for many years on the regional cooperation in the Black Sea region. It was the co-host and the venue of the European Maritime Day in 2018. It is part of the Horizon 2020 biggest research project for the Black Sea - DOORS. The Vice Rector of BFU, prof. Milen Baltov, PhD is a member of the Assembly supporting the activities of the mission(s) for Healthy Oceans, Seas, Coastal and Inland Waters, and a Co-chair of the Black Sea Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, structured by the DG R&I at the European Commission.
